So recently, I took a break from working on The Darkness Within, and made a few maps for fun, just to try something different. And now that I'm looking at them, they're honestly a lot better than anything I have in TDW. And the more I like at TDW, the more I realize how sub-par it is. And now I've realized I have to make a decision.

Option 1, I can continue making TDW, finish it up in 1-2 months, and release it in its current fun-but-not-its-full-potential state. This way, I could quickly move onto the last game of the trilogy, and make it several times better than LotH and TDW.

Or, Option 2, I could go back and redo HUGE chunks of TDW. This would probably set the release back anywhere from 6-12 months, but in the end, the game would be slightly better. But not radically better, as it's still going off the same base. It would just have a slightly more expansive overworld.

Those are my two options, and to be honest, I'm not sure what I want to do. Part of me wants to just get this done (I've been working on it for over a year now...) and move onto the final chapter of the trilogy, while part of me wants to make this better, even if it does take more time. So I want your input. Which would you rather see?

Hi Russ

I suggest this: You start working on the thrid game now and make it your main project. Whenever you feel like working on another project you will touch up the second game and eventually finish it some time when you are already a good chunk into the third one.
This way you would probably still release the second one in it's current not-so-perfect state but at least you wouldn't force yourself to work on it. And more importantly you won't have to throw away everything you've done for the second one and you'd still enjoy ZQuesting because you'd be working on a "better" project as your main project.

From what I've seen it's perfectly fine so far. I think you should get it done and THEN go back and do tweaks and stuff.

The hardest part of working on a large project, any large project, is actually finishing and releasing it. You know the old saying, the last 10% of work takes 90% of the time. If you decide to go back and tweak for another 6-9 months the odds of you releasing the quest are dramatically decreased because you will be more and more eager to move onto something new (we're all like this). That feeling of wanting to "just get it done and move on" will just increase over time.

So, with that in mind, I suggest finishing what you have and releasing it. Take all that extra skill you have now and make the next game in the series that much better. icon_smile.gif

I agree with Yoshimi for the most part, though I would reverse which is major. I'd focus on finishing the second one, but do work on the third one as a side project until the second one is done. From the sounds of it, you're not too far from finishing it, so why not jump into it and finish it off, leaving the very best for last? icon_cat.gif

Though I also agree with Pokemonmaster64, I think what's there is perfectly fine. icon_smile.gif

Hmmm... My vote depends on how much the game would improve if you were to revamp it. If it's just graphical improvement, then I believe you should finish what you have and release it. However, if the changes made are gameplay-altering (like an improved storyline, new items, enemy and boss behavior, etc), mabye a few more months of production wouldn't hurt. Just my opinion.

Not sure if you noticed, but the thread's over a year old. Thanks for the input thought! But actually, I decided to go with a modified option 2. It ended up setting the date further back than I thought (about 15 months total), but I think the quest is much better for it. And, funnily enough, I ended up adding new items, enemies, and boss behavior, just like you mentioned.

So basically just pretend I did everything you suggested in the ten minutes since you posted. icon_deformed.gif
