The Legend of ZELDA:Hero's Shadow

To keep stuff organized, I will mark new information with '*NEW*' for about two days, than I will edit it out. It's just for your reading-pleasure.

=Prologue=

The village Lauron lies deep in the southerneast cornor of the kingdom of Hyrule. The villagers of Lauron live a simple life in careless freedom, framed in woody idyll. Among them is a boy who learns the ways of the sword from the village's only swordsman, Kilian. His name is Link...
One day dark clouds shade the calm idyll of Lauron village and monsters come crashing out of the forest to attack the villagers. Link trys to stop them but the strike of one of the monsters puts him out of action. Half-concious Link watches Kilian dropping his sword as a sign of surrender and leaving the destructed village with the monsters.
In order to rescue his friend Link engages with the shadows themselves in an act of despair...

=Chapter I=
The player begins his adventure in the villlage of Lauron. He's given some simple tasks by the villagers such as talking to them, pushing a block out of the way for someone, doing other stuff that introduces gameplay to the player. Then, he will practice combot with Kilian. Kilian gives the sword and the shield to Link and introduces him how to use them. The player will than be requested to clean up a fairly small dungeon to get used to stuff. When he's done and turns back, the village will be attacked.
Kilian leaves town with the monsters, Link is half-concious by the monsters blow.
Then, when every hope seems gone, a dark siluehette appears in front of Link. That dark being offers help 'cause it happens that he knows where to find Kilian, if Link does him 'a favor' in return.
He asks for Links body. Desprately Link agrees in order to safe Kilian and Dark Link takes ownership of Links body...

"Finally we found one of the ancient folk, living in the shadows..." ~monster in Lauron woods

=Features=
-One full overworld: Lauron Village ,Lauron woods, Goronia Canyon, Hylain Shore, Temple Ruins, Hyrule Field [those names may change]
-Four main dungeons (1. Forest themd, 2. Fire Themed, 3. Water themed, 4. Light and Time themed)

Oh noes, people think my temples are going to be cliche! Well, I wrote down that the temples are forest, fire and water themed beacuse it actually is the theme of them. But they will be designed after the 'shadow' they represent: the forest temple will represent the 'Shadow of the Skies', therefore it will also be wind themed. The temple will need to be torn upside down like the stone tower temple in MM was. The fire temple will represent the 'Shadow of the Grounds' and will mainly have an earth theme. The water temple will represent the 'Shadow of the Absyss' and will have an ice theme. Since I spoiled the forest temple that heaviliy now, I won't spoil fire and water any further. The Temple of time will have such gimmicks such as time traveling and also mirror puzzles and stuff. I hope I clarified.

-Great story: Mysterious, dark, dramatic, epic!
-Trading sequence
-most secrets will be put in little quests
-minigames
-Epona: Link will be able to ride Epona! (However, DarkLink won't for obvious reasons)
-New Items: They may not be totally new, but I will costumize them that heavy, they will feel new.

-The totally new Link / DarkLink feature:
The player will be able to play as Link and Dark Link, depending on the quest status he will once even be able to switch absolutly free between both forms! Link and DarkLink will have a different feeling, while DarkLink deals more damage to monsters the guards of the towns will try to kill him and NPCs will avoid contact. Both will have an own set of items (DarkLink will fight more agressive, while Link will posess the shield and items that are more 'heroic' and less 'cruel') and a different subscreen. (I have a good scripter who offers help with the scripts needed).

-Tileset: This quest will be built in a GB tileset. I'm awaiting Joes to start making the real deal. I will draw custom palettes and and various custom tiles! To get an idea of the style I'm going for have a look at my concept art of Link, a crossing of TP's epicness and the style of the oracle series!

Thank you for the compliment icon_smile.gif

Version: 2.5 beta

Percantage: Uhm, well don't know icon_wink.gif. A little, I guess, like I wrote, I haven't made any screen so far to actually use it in this quest. I'm, well, planning, I just show it off (way too early) becuase I posted it in showcase#3, too, and got curious what people think about it.

The story says that Link is even better than his master, yet the quest begings with the master teaching Link how to use a sword and a shield, like Link have never touched those things... Rather use a flashback in which Link holds sword/shield the first time.
I also start to get bored of the hidden message in ZC quests that Link is the only one who is able for even such simple tasks like pushing a stone... If Lauron is that perfect, you should put some more able men/women, even if just as unimportant NPCs.

Also, are you sure about this forest/fire/water temple idea? At first I didn't even want to reply in this thread because of it. And if everybody just uses the same themes over and over, I will need to stop playing quests entirely. You could say that you are new, but I don't think that this disallows you to use some new or rare themes. See, the light/time theme sounds good. I guess you got even that from OoT, but it's at least rarely used in ZC. Even when I was making my first quest, I didn't even think about using such simple themes, even though I didn't know that they were overused. Except for water, I was trying that theme. But a forest dungeon as first one once again... I think you can't show anything new.

That Link/Dark Link idea sounds more than excellent, it's so advanced, almost better even than SNES features usually are... but exactly this why I have doubts of its working... Especially that you are new and are still using forest/fire/water themes.

I will be the first to congratulate you when it gets finished. I will also need to try a demo, if there be one once.

Well, that was something that bugged me, too. I guess I'll rewrite that line that tells that Link is better than his master. I wrote this prologue text like to show it to Joe, who's the one offering help with scripts (so no need to have doubts in the DarkLink Link idea icon_biggrin.gif). Your absoloutely right, it needs to be fixed. The block pushing: it wont be any of those magical triforce-stones. It will be a wooden box and an old lady will ask Link if he does her the favor of pushing that damn thing out of her way. See, the beginning will be like it was in TP. It will be a little side quest if you like. You won't get acess to Kilian's house before you haven't done the other stuff.

Oh noes, people think my temples are going to be cliche! Well, I wrote down that the temples are forest, fire and water themed beacuse it actually is the theme of them. The Temple of time will have such gimmicks such time traveling and for the light attribut also mirror puzzles and stuff. I hope I clarified.

The Link / DarkLink system will work. I bet Joe knows what he was talking of when he told me that it isn't too hard to set it up. Oh, and don't think cliche-ish again: Link isn't on the 'dark' side, but just possed by a being of hatered. If he is not, DarkLink hides in Links body. He's also a bit replacing the fairy, he's the one that will guide the player mostly.

And there will be a demo once, because I'm going to finish (actually, to start xD) this once.

I knew it was wrong posting this before time. Damn. Well, but now I can improve on your suggestions...

Don't change the fact that Link is better than his master, just change the sword/shield giving or make it a flashback. That sword/shield giving scene would be out of place anyway, if there were any training going on before.

Ah, so the temples won't be cliché... that's good to know. Dungeon's are my favourite things in quests.

Ah, so there won't be a fairy... that's a relief, another cliché fallen. Dark Link being the guide inside Link? Cheeky boy, you were playing Prince of Persia 3: Two Thrones. So did I and I loved the concept. That's a mega great game.

So I see this will be good. Keep informing us to snatch free suggestions. I should be more active following others' projects.

Nah, it's okay Link being a noob swordsman, I'm killing cliches, you know? icon_wink.gif.

Yep, I mainly was thinking about the PoPTT concept. It was cool, wasn't it ? icon_wink.gif.

You're gonna be big man. icon_razz.gif I swear, your screens are epic. And I mean epic, as in... EPIC!

Yeah, I'm really looking forward to play this... in fact, right now, it's one of the only quests I'm looking forward to. I mean, I rarely play quests, and I post in topics about them even less often.

I'm hoping you're gonna put up a demo... but don't rush it like I did... take your time, okay? You need to blow people away with this... and you're going to icon_razz.gif

Seriously, one of the best screendesigners on Pure at the moment, are you - Yoda (me)

Great work!

--Robin

EDIT: CastChaos, don't you dare sayign that having a fairy is a cliche. Cause it's not. In fact, if I'm not mistaken, the fairy idea has been used three times...

Really. Look at the fairy this way: Just like in OoT, Navi was a... navigator. A GPS of sorts. It helps the player out, if the player WANTS to. This is REALLY important to have in games nowaday, cause believe it or not, not all players are super-gamers. There are casuals too, like me.
I've never found a Zelda game too easy... in fact, I had a hard time trying to beat AlttP... still haven't done it. And I do believe the lack of a fairy or a helper was the cause of that.

A lot of earlier games lack this very important element.
Of course, that's not the ONLY reason I've got a fairy in THP, but I believe it's going to enhance the gameplay a lot.

Either way, it's NOT a cliche... having a big sweaty Bruce Willis fight a loud Vin Diesel... in a rainy night, while having the backdrop of a huge city, and lightening striking around where the two fight... THAT is cliche. icon_wink.gif
It's also cheesy. xD

Yay, pretty thank you for saying I'm good at designing screens, it's the one thing that's most important to me: to make something well-looking. I'm not sure if I really am one of the best screendesigners but I'll take it for granted since it was said by... one of the best screendesigners - you! icon_biggrin.gif Thank's a bunch, I'm even a little proud now icon_wink.gif.
Yep, one day there will be a demo. And it won't release at any point I'm not like 100% satisfied with it. So I'll take my time. Right now, anyhow I'll take my time to draw something icon_wink.gif. You remember, I guess. icon_biggrin.gif.
So yeah, it's great honour reading this from you, it's motivating. Whoo. icon_wink.gif

Well, I guess CC was wanting to say that fairy patners in ZC became a cliche, since they are used quite often. And I totally agree with what you said about the fairy, it's important! And by the way, I'm a causal, too, I'm not even able to beat a hard ZC Quest icon_redface.gif .

(Two days passed so this one passes the double post rule.)

So, right now I'm planning the introducing part of the game in Lauron village in detail. I felt like telling you the nearly-non-spoiler information.
Lauron village and Lauron-Ranch go together as one area. Here you have a list of the characters:

Link: Link is around 17 years of age and works at the Lauron-Ranch. He is the protagonist of the game and is controlled by the player.
Kilian: Kilian is a mentor towards Link early in the game. He tends to be rather mysterious.
Talon: Talon is the leader of the Lauron-Ranch. It happens that he's rather lazy. He's the husband of Romani and father to Malon.
Malon: Malon is the daughter of Talon and Romani. She's good friends with Link. She tries to educate her father to be less lazy.
Romani: Romani is the wife of Talon and mother to Malon. She's the expert in terms of cows and milk. She also keeps the Ranch-Shop
Ingo: Ingo is a worker at Lauron-Ranch. He spends his days working and grumbling. He plans to go to Hyrule Castle town to get a new and better paid job.
Jim: Jim is the leader of the Bombers Secret Society of Justice. The other Bombers do what he says them to do. Jim dreams of keeping peace in Hyrule together with his companions.

Major and his wife. (Henry and Helena?)

Makes a total of 13 villangers (The Bombers Secret Society of Justice make a total of 6 kids).
That's pretty much all I can tell you without spoiling unreasonable. So, what do you think? Do you have ideas for names of the major and his wife?

So long, Sheik.

I think Lauron-Lon-Ranch should just be called Lauron Ranch, it just flows of the tongue better. icon_razz.gif

And whenever I see the name Basil, I think of Basil Faulty from the British Comedy, Faulty Towers. In this case, I think you should just go with the cliche's, and use the name Ingo instead.

The major could be called Henry, and his wife called Helena.

That's all I got... icon_razz.gif

Yeah, without the Lon is rolls better, your somewhat right. Well, I think Talon, Malon and Milk are enough to get an idea that it is Lon-Lon ranche. So I'll change it.

OH, yep Ingo was the name of that guy. In german he's called Basil. Damn, I have to look up stuff before I use references icon_wink.gif.

Henry and Helena soudns reasonable. My ears are open to other ideas, anyhow.

I was thinking that Basil could have been the German equivalent, but I wasn't sure.

Go with Basil if you want, but if you want it to feel similar to the Lon Lon Ranch or Romani Ranch for the majority of PureZC, I would go with Ingo.
