Getting Messages to work

A basic tutorial written by rocksfan13.

Many people are confused with the way that one gets those guy rooms in dungeons and houses to display a message string.

There are 4 things that must be met if you want these to work correctly.

  1. The Dmap level number that the message is on MUST be numbered with a value of 1 or higher.
  2. The Dmap that the message is on MUST be set to NES-Dungeon or Interior type. Dungeon or Cave in 2.10.
  3. A guy must be set in the room.
  4. The "Special Rooms And Guys Are In Caves Only" Dmap rule must be unchecked.
Here is a quick demonstration of how it comes together...

Go to Quest->Dmaps, highlight a Dmap number and click edit.

First hit the drop down box next to TYPE and select either NES Dungeon or Interior. In 2.10 the options are Dungeon or Cave.
Next set the number in the Level box to 1 or higher. If it's a house you want this in, set it to a number that any of your levels/dungeons ARE NOT using. The highest level number you can have is 255.
Now, if you're using 2.5 click on the Flags tab.

Ensure that the "Special Rooms And Guys Are In Caves Only" Dmap rule is NOT CHECKED.

Next, go to the room in which you want they message to appear, the go to Screen->Guy. You can also press G. Make sure your room corresponds with the Map number the Dmap effects.
This menu will appear.

Select one of the guys listed and click on "OK"

If you've done everything right, it should end up like this...

To understand the differences in what you select as Type, SEE Dmap Definitions.
