Once again I'm looking for interesting ideas featuring themes/puzzles/gimmicks/challenges you would expect to see in a water dungeon that dominantly takes an "ocean" theme. I'm currently having a small case of designer's block with this dungeon.

I was a pretty big fan of the idea from Great Bay Temple where you had to change the currents. Perhaps by changing the currents you could access new areas, either by swimming, or filling up areas in a below floor.

So..my ideas are kind of adventurey. But perhaps something might stick out.

I always wanted to see the introduction of an underground civilization. Zoras are obvious. But maybe even a race of people who live at the bottom of the ocean.

Perhaps you could have Link travel the ocean to find collect information on sealife which would be returned to an NPC to complete his studies.

Maybe there is a town or towns where the water is not flowing into their village. And as such they are unable to procure proper nourishment. Could even take this a step further and have it connect to a system underground that has to restore rivers/lakes to your land.

Perhaps you need to reach an island, but the ocean has had its flow blocked off by... something.

There could be a dangerous aquatic animals causing harm to sea life.

You could even potentially go for a pirate theme maybe use a raft to travel across a bunch of shipwrecked boats or even make the entire dungeon based on taking down an entire fleet of pirates.

Maybe the pirates are the reason that a village is struggling as well.

That's my thoughts on it.

This is a gimmick I came up with for Herald of Heroes. Each floor you have to lower the water level. It has 5 floors. They are deep and shallow water. When you lower the deep water on that floor it is now possible to fall through it. The shallow water you can now walk in it.

I like the idea of a water pumping facility or dam. With pipes that move water throughout the level, requiring them to have either water flowing or not flowing to allow passages to open up or secrets to trigger.

It could be on a tropical island in the middle of the ocean. And the whole island is sort of a dungeon. With cave systems and ruined temples and stuff like that.

A pirate theme sounds fun to me. Either a treasure cave or a shipwreck or something to that effect.

Actually, it's quite possible, because I've seen it done before.

If you play Lightwulf's quest, Islands of Zelda, there's a semi-sunken ship that you can swim to. It's nicely torn up, has ship-obstacles like barrels, it's even leaning sideways, so the upper floors have more water on the left side and wood on the right side, and eventually you can pass through a hole in the bottom of the ship to an underwater ocean-bed area with rocks and stuff. It's quite well-done, and the good music was a nice bonus. I'd be happy to see another thing like that.

There's quite a lot you can do, even with just the base program if you just understand how to do a few things with what you are given.

The only real limitations are your creativity, the tileset you use and sometimes a need for a script. And even then depending on your knowledge you can make some of that simpler.

Maybe something where you have to collect salt from the floor of drained rooms in order to complete the dungeon. Like, after you've collected a certain amount of salt, you can generate a block, which can be used to trigger secrets, block enemy projectiles or traps, etc. EDIT: To avoid pointless grinding you could allow the player to destroy the block and reclaim the salt (or some of it) after use, then just require more blocks later on, for puzzles with increasing difficulty.
