The save file was found, but could not be opened. Wait a moment and try again. If this problem persists, reboot. If the file still can't be opened, you'll need to delete zc.sav.

Basically, the following passage above is worse to see than the black screen of death. And this happened to me many, many, many times, it's the reason why I refuse to play big quests anymore.

Is there a way to never cause this to never happen ever again? I heard about backing up your save files, but I'm not sure how to do it. If some one could tell me how to do that, that'll be much appreciated.

Also using 2.5.0.2 right now. Don't know if I should update yet...

Using the same ZC version, but it doesn't happen to me. Hmm..

This kind of corruption should only happen if the ZC program is killed or crashes while saving quest progress. It's probably also a bad idea to open two copies of ZC at once.

If you notice corruption in other circumstances (and have some hints about what might have caused it) please file a bug report and I will look into it.

As for backing up the zc.sav file: just go to the folder containing ZC and create a copy of zc.sav (for example, copy zc.sav and name the copy zc.sav.bak). Then if you get the error you posted, delete zc.sav and rename zc.sav.bak back to zc.sav.

What operating system are you using? Windows, Linux, or OSX; and what version/release/distro of that OS?

I also need to know if you use ZLaunch, or an alternative 'launcher', or if you run the Zelda binary file directly. Post a copy of your ag.cfg file too, just to be safe. You might have the force exit flag enabled, which could cause this.

I have not had a ZC.sav file eat itself since old 2.5 betas, or 2.50.0 RCs. It could indicate a hard drive (or flash card) issue, on your end, as well.

As DD said, just make a copy of the file every once in a while. If you are nervous, make a copy just before you start using ZC every day, and if it loads, delete the previous copy. I usually retain multiple save files merely because I want more quest slots.

As for updating, if you want to try using the 2.53.0 betas to play quests, you can do that. Just be sure to report any bugs or issues in the thread; and be sure to always use the latest beta, gamma, or release of 2.53. ( As of this post, Beta 2 is the latest. )
