When I pick up a sword in my quest, it doesn't appear in the subscreen as if I never picked it up at all (it can't be used either).
Why is this?

Is the 'Equipment Item' box enabled in the item editor for that item?

 

If so, then you may have conflicts with the item selection, and placement coordinates on the subscreen.

 

If that box is disabled, enable it.

A. Equipment item box is enabled.
B. The A + B quest rule is on, and when its turned off, it seems to work.
Would there be a way to fix the problem without turning the rule off?

You are probably using an B-only subscreen type. Check that your subscreen is an A+B type.

 

B-only subscreens do not know how to set a sword, and do not treat it as an inventory item.

 

If you are using a 'stock' subscreen, go into your DMap settings, and change it out to a type of 'New, B+A'.
