So I've never been one to use nes dungeon mode due to it forcing you to walk two tiles up,
Not that it may be relevant to you any more, but just for reference, how many tiles you walk up is determined by the room side's status as set in the F6 Select Door configuration. The default setting is "Wall," so if you start designing freeform, then you'll walk in 2 tiles from any given side because the default walls are 2 tiles thick. But if you change the room side's status from "Wall" to "Open," then you'll only walk in 1 tile from any given side because the default doorway is only 1 tile from the side. Even though I can't stand 2-tile walk-in on freeform layouts, I find 1-tile tolerable if necessary, so it's worth considering, especially if it saves you a lot of warp configurations.

Good to know, thanks Steve.
