Tricks with strings

An intermediate tutorial by Koopa.

Strings that appear ... and disappear
Ever wanted to make a guy that talks to you when you walk up to him? A sign that you read when you stand in front of it? Here's one way:
Make 2 identical screens. Make a copy of a floor/ground combo and set its type to direct warp, place this in front of your guy/sign. Set the tile warp to direct warp, and make it warp you to the second screen. This must be a level>0 dmap.

On the second screen, you set up the guy and string. Then place direct warp combos all around the square where you land. Set tile warp up to return you to the first screen. That's it.

This way you also can walk all over the screen once the string's gone and you're back on the first screen again.

In these screens, I've made the warps different tiles for demonstration purposes

Using combos for strings
This is another method that you can do even more with, but it takes time to set up. Basically, it's the old "flags and secrets" trick. You make some tiles with the string in, combos for those tiles, and put a line of secret flags on the screen. The "string" combos go in the secret 11 etc. slots.
You'll need to copy another floor combo - this time make it trigger (temp).
So when you stand on the trigger your string appears.
Then, you'll want the string to disappear when you move off again. For this, you'll need two secret combos.
Let's use 30 and 31: put [30] flags all around your temp combo. Put the trigger temp in secret 30. Then, Ctrl-click all your string secret combos and put [31] flags on them. Finally, put a normal ground tile in secret 31.
Result: when you step off the trigger, you land on another that the [30]'s placed around you. That clears the string again. (You will have to leave and re-enter the screen to see it again.)

These marked tiles are 'trigger temp'.

Using in your quest
The most common uses for these tricks are talking to NPCs (the flags or the second screen can be made to display a box around the text, a picture of the guy's face, etc.) and reading signs. What else you might do with it is limited only by your imagination.
Have fun with zquest!
