Layers

An intermediate tutorial by Old-Skool, modified by rocksfan13.

The use of Layers is heard of frequently in ZC communities, and to a new user of ZC, it may sound complex and intimidating. This Tutorial is to help you use them, so that you'll be able to understand them better and perhaps use them more often.

Screens that use Layers actually consist of at least 2 Screens. One is the main screen you are working on, and the other is a screen where anything that ISN'T the transparent color (in other words blank) will appear.

Okay, to see what I mean, set up a screen. keep it simple, just put down some grass or something.

Now, on A WHOLE OTHER SCREEN, fill the whole screen with a blank tile (A solid walkable tile of the blank transparency color.) Now, from here, there's two ways you can go.

One: Easy to use, but you have to set it up first and remember where it is. Go back to your grass screen, and under Data-Layers, enter the coordinates and map number of the screen with the blank tiles.

Hit okay. Now, hit page up or down on the bottom box under the main workfield screen until it displays numbers with radio buttons. make sure the layer number you entered the above information for is checked, and now you'll start drawing on that layer (also drawing on that screen from your grass screen!)

The other method is to simply place your combos directly on the screen that will be a layer, then go back to the grass screen and enter the coordinates and map.
Your final result should look like this:

In ZC when playing the quest, you will see Link and all enemies walk under the clouds and lightning.
If say you wanted just an overhang or tree top, you would place those on layers 3 or 4. So any fliers, ie. Keese, or Peahat can fly over them but Link and any ground enemies will walk under the tiles.

Now, about the layers...

There are seven of them. Layer "0" is the ground and the default area you will use. It relates to the screen you are currently on.

Here is a brief rundown of which layers behave how:
  • Layer 0
    • All combos apply to Link. Nothing appears over him EXCEPT the "Overhead" combo type, which appears above layers 3 and 4, but below layers 5 and 6, in addition to flying enemies. Note that "Overhead" combos only work as such when placed on layer 0- for example, if an overhead combo was placed on layer 2, it would function on layer 2, not above layer 4.
  • Layer 1 & 2
    • These appear under link, but over layer 0, blocking it from vision. However, note that although their walkability overrides that of Layer 0's walkability, the combo type of anything on layer 1 does NOT. Damage combos on layer 0 hidden under a save combo on layer 1 will take precendence over the save combos, and you won't be able to save on that area.
  • Layer 3 & 4
    • These appear over link, but under flying enemies. Great for things like arches and treetops.
  • Layer 5 & 6
    • These appear over Link and over flying enemies. They're great for things like weather effects, clouds, or tree overhead.
  • Note that Layer 2 is "over" layer 1, layer 4 is above layer 3, and layer 6 is above layer 5.
The Transparency tab in the Layers dialogue box simply indicates that you want to be able to see through that layer. this can be useful for things like darkness and fog, but it doesn't use true transparency. It just alters colors, and this can lead to some odd colors appearing beneath them.

If you Click "Auto", then every screen on the entered map will cover every screen on the map you are using as a layer. this also can be useful, but since many like to work indivually with screens, it's not recommended.
