There's an amazing shooter called Expendable I played on PC. I think it was just a free pack-in, I've never really heard this game talked about much

A more straight example I suppose is Binding of Isaac. I had no idea what this game was other than it existed, and may have heard it referred to as a roguelike? It was a game Evan played religiously and ended up gifting me a copy, so I tried it out while knowing nothing other than those few things and maybe a few out-of-context exclamations Evan made while playing it.

... I got hooked easily.

The dozens of bootleg CDs that came with my PS1 introduced me to many classics I had no knowledge of beforehand. Granted, there were some crappy ones in there too, like Barbie and Fifth Element. :blind:

On PS2 my mom used to rent a lot of games from Block Buster. Again, there were a lot of crap games I couldn't stand to play for more than an hour, but there were some gems here and there. I distinctively remember the Spider-Man 1 and 2 games being surprisingly good for movie tie-ins and played them thoroughly. Pac-Man World 2 was one rental that I enjoyed enough that I ended up renting it twice in a row and then eventually getting my own copy.

Nowadays I probably rely too heavily on the opinions of critics, and if not critics, then by popularity or underrated game lists. This usually swings one of two ways. On one hand, I've played games that are well received yet don't touch me personally. On the other hand, there have been games that I found were just as good as the critics claim. There is probably too many games in Steam collection for me to start listing them off, but if I have to pick at least one title in particular, I'm going to go with something everyone should be familiar with by now. Undertale I bought solely for the fact that it was relatively cheap, received overwhelming positive reviews, and that I had nothing else of interest to play at the time. At that point I don't think its popularity had exploded to monumental levels just yet. I wasn't aware of how significant of a piece of gaming history this game would become. I'm definitely not religious about this game like some other people, but nonetheless it exceeded my expectations.

I didn't play Elder Scrolls until Skyrim and was highly excited when I started playing it. Now I have the Special Edition and am still loving it.

I got it on sale and at first I only played it once, though a year later (through the first few months of 2015) I played it for a second time and got hooked from start to finish. It is perhaps the last game of recent memory I can remember having enough of an attention span to log more than 50-60 hours into.

When I was about 10, or 11, we went to Blockbuster. I remember seeing the box for Rayman 2 for N64, and it looked really neat. I had never heard of it before, but once I saw that green cartridge, I just knew it had to be good.

I first discovered Rayman when I purchased and downloaded Rayman 1 from the Playstation Store while it was on discount. It very much exceeded my expectations and was tough as nails. I later tried the PSOne classic version of Rayman 2. Can't say I liked it quite as much as the first, but it was a worthwhile experience and at least I could beat it without cheat codes (granted, I did get quite far in the first before I resorted to cheats. Only had a few items missing). Eventually I went on to play Rayman Origins and Legends. Both were very good and me and my brothers enjoyed the multiplayer experience.
