I hate it when I click view image and it instantly downloads instead, or when something says click here to read message, and it downloads a .pdf instead. I wouldn't click those if I knew a download was involved. Is there any thing you do to your browser to display a pop-up window asking you to confirm before a download like that takes place?

Some of these are official things I have to look at, but still I'd like to know first

P.S. I use Safari and Firefox

On Firefox I seem to remember there being a setting that you can activate that asks you where on your computer you want to save any downloads. While not exactly what you're looking for, it should fill that purpose, since it also has a cancel button.

Firefox

Click Tools in the Menu Bar

Options

General Tab (on the left)

"Downloads" section (on the right)

Mess with these settings.

You can also mess with the settings under the Applications Tab (on the left).

I guess Firefox's "always ask where to save" works. That means normal downloads have 2 confirmations while automatic downloads only have one confirmation. That's slightly annoying to confirm regular downloads twice, but better than 0 confirmations for the automatic downloads.
