I am designing a Tower of Hera type dungeon. Despite the topic title, it's just going to be called "Tower of Hera". This is an entirely new dungeon that isn't completely faithful to the old SNES Hera, much similar to how ALBW isn't a faithful remake of that dungeon either.

So yes, this is an entirely new dungeon that brings some common themes you'd expect to see from Hera, but what's unique about this dungeon is that it's in an ice region and thus it is an ice dungeon.

I currently have the layout done for the dungeon, but I'm looking for some gameplay ideas since the dungeon itself at the moment seems to be "pretty but plain and boring" as far as design goes. I feel there's not enough gameplay variety added to the dungeon yet.

This is why I'm posting here to try and get some suggestions, as I always do when creating new dungeons.

Any suggestions?

Maybe have a part where you have to melt some ice on the floor to drop down to the floor below you?

I have no idea what a tower of hera might be. But in regards of ice and tower the mc-sunshine-melts-ice technique comes to mind. Could be furthermore combined with the zc-quest-have-it-all-flooding technique. Both including holes in the ground that could be also be used to fall down to lower areas. And sunshine and melted water could be used for other things, like the raft or plants growing up. With these three things alone it should be possible to create a complex tower-dungeon.

[Edit] I know I am slow, but to see that I needed 10 mins to write this bit of text is .. ;)

Ooh, a height based ice dungeon! I've always wanted to do one of those...

What about using ice to build up momentum into a pit so you can land farther in the floor below? (A bit like Link Between Worlds with it's ice ruins, only the ice would fling you farther in the floor below)

Not sure if I can use this idea, since most of the dungeon's layout is already done. I did manage to create a pit that requires light to go through all the floors to melt ice in the basement concealing a couple of important treasures. But I can consider making pits that are only accessible through the melting of ice.

I originally felt that forcing in the light gimmick would have become a problem since it's never good to force in anything. But it does make the dungeon look more interesting and less plain.

Here's some things that can spice up the dungeon and make it feel more like an ice dungeon:

-Frost-breathing enemies or statues...or statues that shoot "snowballs"

-Falling icicles / stalagmites

-Ice Block Puzzles (blocks you can push that keep sliding once they are pushed until they hit another solid combo or a "no push block" flag

-Like others have said, melting objects to complete puzzles or grant access to new areas, like the floor below, or melting snow/ice that's covering a doorway

-Chilly water that Link can swim in with the flippers but will get damaged in periodically unless he has another special item (such as a custom tunic or ring)

For a quest where water is very prevalent (Literally added into most screens). It's almost humorous that this quest doesn't offer flippers. lol
