The problem with games with the always online requirement is that if you go into an area that has a bad signal (just about every grocery store by me) you can't even play the game. Pokemon Shuffle Mobile has this feature while the 3DS Pokemon Shuffle doesn't, so odds are this game didn't need it. They just felt the need to have it for security or whatever. Extra battery drain and data usage also sucks.

That is very true, guess I didn't even think of that. With my cell service, there are many areas that have very bad reception. Ugh...

It now has a store page in Google Play with a preorder option, so it'll be on Android soon enough it seems.

I downloaded the game onto my iPad maybe last week, excited to play the game. I remember hearing something about having to pay for the game, but I saw it was free, and took that opportunity. Well, I was wrong, and a HUGE chunk of the game is locked behind a paywall. That was pretty disappointing. I'm not willing to shell out the $15 needed to access the rest of the game. There should be at least SOME other way of unlocking the other levels, maybe by collecting the coloured coins in the three levels you DO get to play.

I'm still a little disappointed, but then again, I have most of the Mario platformers on my 3DS, so it's not like I'm missing out on anything big.

Wait until you're an adult and actually have to start paying for everything!  Welcome to a world where money is exchanged for goods and services. :P

In all seriousness, this is why you should be glad it isn't F2P.  I can understand the confusion of getting to play like 3 levels and then there being a "paywall," but the game wasn't advertised as free- Nintendo did say it would cost a one-time payment of $10, which I think is pretty fair, honestly.  The ever-so-common F2P model on mobile platforms is utterly obnoxious, imho, because you tend to get locked out of a game unless you're willing to fork over cash, which adds up... and is the reason some people will spend more than $1000 in a year on Candy Crush.  Like my roommate's boss does, for example.  And I find that sorta manipulative stuff to be really scummy.

I guess that's all true, and I'll admit it's a good thing that they only expect a one-time payment, rather than in something like Candy Crush, like you said.

I was just a little confused about the three-level limit, which is part of the reason I made that post. I can't expect everything to be free, so I don't know why I was hopeful that Mario Run would be any different.

I'm actually satisfied with Super Mario Run. The price is a bit high for the relatively few worlds there are but that's really my only complaint. As far as gameplay, graphics, and music go it's very good. Hopefully they see people's complaint with the price and update it with more levels to really make it worth the money to those on the fence. The level design is excellent as well.

I'm hoping for more of their franchises to get mobile games, though I'm not sure how a game like Zelda would go, clearly an auto runner wouldn't work. I suppose there are Zelda-like games such as Oceanhorn they could get ideas from.

Donkey Kong Country could work as an autorunner but they would have to come up with a different method of gameplay as to not have it labeled as a reskin of Mario Run.

And yet a good number of the Pokemon F2P games aren't like that, so I don't know for sure they couldn't have done anything else. Like Pokemon Go and Pokemon Shuffle (3DS version at least) are F2P and playable without spending money provided you can deal with some tediousness. You can still spend money to get ahead of course, but it isn't necessary.

Not too big on these two, but Pokemon Rumble World (3DS) and Pokemon Picross (3DS) are similar as well. They have an option to essentially buy the game and get rid of the F2P model built in. Pokemon Picross would take you over a year to get through everything $30 would let you bypass though iirc. Rumble World is still kinda junky even without the F2P model.

Anyhow, I'm not actually that bothered by the cost honestly. I'll probably try this whenever it comes out on Android and bail beyond the free world still. I don't think I'd play it often enough to warrant the purchase of the additional worlds.

Android version coming in March.

Funny that Android gets the Fire Emblem mobile game before it gets Mario Run. Also funny that for Fire Emblem Heroes, it's the other way around: Android gets it first, iOS later. Never mind that.

As a poor college student, $10 seemed a bit steep for a phone app. However, I was able to enjoy the F2P version for what it was. I got all the coins and kicked some butt in Toad Rally.

I'm quite intrigued to see what Nintendo does with these sorts of apps in the future.

The game is finally out on Android, which was originally supposed to be tomorrow, but they dropped it a day early as a present. It actually works on my older phone, with only a few hitches, so that's nice. Makes me wonder why Fire Emblem Heroes crashes all the time... Anyway, I only played the free trial and it's... fine. I'd play the full game, though I don't know how I feel about ten dollars for playing the full game just yet is the thing. I'm tempted to wait for a sale and then just do the challenges I can do in the meantime. Definitely takes me a bit to get used to, it doesn't feel much like typical Mario games, though that's the point. But again, dunno how I feel about dropping ten dollars on it yet. Might need some convincing for that.

The one annoyance I had was the game forcing me to go through all the modes in its tutorial instead of just letting me explore the menu at my leisure, or at least being asked if I wanted a tour. I'd complain less if it didn't make me play Toad Rally, but still. Maybe Breath of the Wild spoiled me on not having annoying tutorials.

Random note: Missed opportunity, using the NSMB music instead of a remix of the classic tune. This is probably a lot of kids' introduction to Mario, so they should've given them the theme many of us grew up on as well.

I may give it a try also, TS. I can say I'd be in a similar position about whether or not to throw $10 at it right now. Suppose I would have to give it a chance before I would say either way though.

Possible off-topic but, I really dislike the acapella "Bop-Bah" NSMB music, something about the sound is very off-putting to me. I do quite enjoy the Super Mario Sunshine acapella in the bonus stages though.

For those who can wait and would like to have the whole thing to try it out, you can get Google Opinion Rewards off the app store for free, and do small surveys for occasional small amounts of credit.  We got Mario Run for free basically because of that.  You won't earn much per day but it'll add up eventually.

Anyway it's decently fun and is a nice distraction from stuff that's uh, a bit more involving.  Admittedly some of those special coins can be tough to get at times so it's not a cakewalk... and they actually managed to make ghost houses work in an auto-runner which is actually impressive?

Keep forgetting to update this, but after playing around with the free levels and getting the coins in some of them, I'd have to say... yeah, I think I'd buy this game. When I get a better device that can actually consistently run it smoothly because my phone sucks. But yeah, I'd say it's pretty good for what it is, I just hate the online requirement still.
