Would you mind sharing OoT fishing strategies? I have some things I try, but I'm never sure if what I'm doing is making it easier or harder.

I can get the fish that I'm after to bite easily enough, but once it's hooked I get confused.

I generally reel it in the whole time and when it's swimming away from me I also pull on the rod. My thinking is that the fish is more likely to go in the direction with less pull on the line (thus when it's swimming toward me it only has the force of the reel pulling on it, but when it swims away it also has the force of Link pulling on the rod - so it hurts the fish more to swim away). I also let go of all the buttons when the fish is jumping out of the water.

Is that correct or am I making things harder for myself? It generally takes me a long time to catch anything.

(I was always frustrated the game tells you the controls, but is super vague on strategy)

Here my strategy :

1 - start to fish in the water and not on  land

2-  the same thing that you do, but i keep holding the buttons even when fish jump and always keep the rod to down-right or down-left.

3 - When the fish is near you ( still whit boots in the water ) move for a moment and whit decision the rod to the left or to the right, sometimes Link catch the fish immediatly after that

No a big stategy, but it work often.

I start in the water like dark ice dragon, and always pull the stick in the polar opposite direction of the fish's swimming. It just takes time. When they jump I don't really do anything. I don't hold Z the whole time though. I think holding L or R let's you reel faster, but I might confusing that with TP.

I remember that years ago I used to only bring the fish toward me when it wasn't running away hard, so as not to snap the line and so the fish would tire itself out. Not sure if that helped or not.

EDIT:

Well, I finally caught it! What I did this time was pull hard when he was calm, and pull less when he was fighting...
