In Les Tristes Tropes anthropologist Claude Leví-Strauss develops the idea that there are two types of societies: those that practice cannibalism and those that don't. While the former consume dangerous individuals (like criminals, enemies and so on), the latter react towards them in the opposite, that is to say expulsive, manner: they throw them out of the social body (into a cell). I like his metaphorical playing on orality here very much, it sheds light on the issue in a very interesting way (and it is a very Freudian move as well, of course, but that was to be expected of Leví-Strauss).

I think strike is mainly playing Devil's advocate, so as to make us think about this discussion beyond our immediate reactions.

I personally can't see there being any good motivation behind human cannibalism.

While certain species of animals are known for it, it's either out of regular practice for that species (think of the preying mantis where the female bites off the male head after copulation), or out of some form of desperation.  In our more modern world, neither would apply to a human being.  I don't think you'd have that sort of desperation even in St. Petersburg.  It's certainly not standard practice for humans anywhere, as far as I would know.  If it was, it would certainly be beyond a form of cult behavior.

Actually, there's a tribe (multiple ones?) down in Papua New Guinea and they eat the brains of their deceased in a ritual. Link: http://www.theguardi...ew-guinea-tribe

I don't think they actually go out and kill people though (atleast, to eat).

This isn't about playing devil's advocate, I am genuinely uncomfortable judging this person. O.O

I think someone asked how eating a human is justified? IT IS NOT. O.O Or not in these circumstances. To a rational person this is not justified but it might have been to the lady. She probably has a very unusual form of empathy if she has any at all.

Ugh. What I mean is to me, personally, I know almost NOTHING about her except that she might have ate people > . < To me that fact alone is not enough for me to feel okay judging her. Maybe I am just weird. To me it feels like it just makes an already terrible situation worse by casting blame on people we know nothing about in a very sensationalist way. I like giving people the benefit of the doubt, or at least people I know I have NO FREAKING CLUE what is going on in their head.

I do side with Strike by the way. I do not see the benefit in moralizing the entire thing, at least not from a point of view that would genuinely want to try and understand what things such as these mean (if anything at all) about our species or her as an exemplar of our species.

Whether she was a cannibal or not, keep in mind the lady was a serial killer.

So if a person brutally murdered a relative I grew up with, am I not allowed to call this guy a monster because I know nothing about him or her? You'll surely understand how preposterous that sounds. Sure, chances are she wasn't normal, but there's no empathy here. She preformed cannibalism -- I'm struggling to see how this is anything but an evil act. Even if she didn't do just that, cannibalism as a concept is still evil and not right.

Give her 30 life sentence, throw her in jail, place said jail on a sinking boat floating on the lava of a volcano, put the key at the other end of the world, and put a bunch of hungry wolves inside the jail. Then take the remains of the jail, and blast it off into the sun. Then, turn the sun into a black hole. Then have everybody ostracize her when she gets out ;)

That monster should never get out. Ever. EVER.

If they did that for every serial killer around the block, that would be a huge waste of resources that could be used on something else.

Also, it has yet to be confirmed whether she actually ate her victims or not. Keep that in mind.

I don't pay taxes with the intent to home and feed prisoners. Don't let them fool you with their "we have no money" shit.

This thread is making me hungry.

Not all prisoners are guilty. If we don't feed them, then we might as well give them the death sentence, as it would be a lot more faster, and a lot less painful.

Also, what gave us the right to lock other human beings up for them not following our "moral code"? Really, it's more of a punishment than a way to seperate the good from the bad. Hell, what gave us the right to put on blue uniforms and go around the street killing black kids playing with bbguns and gamer teens just answering the door holding a white wiimote?

What the hell is wrong with society?

Good idea, let's let everybody kill each other! We don't have the right to say otherwise.

This is kind of an outdated news story, and your post doesn't really bring any new or relevant information to the case at hand. As I feel I've mentioned before, if a thread is quite old, think about if your post will actually contribute anything to the discussion or not.
