Oh boy, here we go, Prospekt tries to make yet another quest. What foolishness has he gotten into now?

So, while I've been getting back into the groove of ZC, after taking basically a hiatus from it, I've been working in ZQuest basically every day now, developing a new quest. Only until now, I finally figured a name. And Schwa raised an excellent point, so I'm just gonna stick with Mementos.

~The Legend of Zelda: Mementos~

-Story(?)-

The storm erupts in the still of night,
A boy alive but only in his dreams,
And the voice, it whispers courage in his ears,
On its first few words his skin begins to crawl,
His nerves begin to shiver with chill,
But without paralysis the blood begins to boil,
And the fire in those fearless eyes grows,
And beyond his sight, he senses destiny.

-Random Information You Might Like To Know, But I Can't Be The Judge Of That-

This really won't be a plot-heavy quest like say, The Hylian Phoenix was going to be. It's generally going to be a "collect 3 of these, then collect 3 of these" although with its certain twists in between, like "Collect 3 of these but only 1 if you really want to". I'm also using 2.10.2 rather than 2.5, because I'd feel discouraged using 2.5 if I only used it to make a custom subscreen and not for oodles of scripts or other nonsense that I don't understand right now. I've already beaten most of the "limitations" anyway, so it doesn't matter much to me.

Most of what I'm aiming for is making a nice open overworld (without it being too boring like, say, Ocarina of Time's, for example. Sorry guys, I do like to jab at it when I can.) and not making everything so clear cut as where to go next entirely. Dungeons will probably take me the longest too, because I get discouraged trying to design them, mostly just trying to make them nonlinear. That being said, my aim is about 7 main dungeons, and 6 smaller dungeons (2-3 will probably be optional anyway), and of course a final dungeon as well, but I'm not too concerned about those details right now, just more or less about actually getting stuff done.

-Side Note-

I also haven't stopped helping Radien with Awakening Courage, I'm still designing it. To be honest though, I really think I could finish this quest even before the expo (Though I'd probably wait to post it there anyway to get it waaaaaaaay more attention), just so that Radien and I can finish up AC in time for the expo as well. Because frankly, that'd be a kickass treat to all of you, I think.

Anywho. That's... just about it.

Oh my goodness. icon_love.gif

First, I think you are a poet at screen-designing-- your Overworld shots are heartwarming and exciting in my blood (I'm not sure that the Octorok graphics fit so well, but that's minor), and your Dungeon shots are ripe. I really love the thing you did with the right side of the dungeon fading into black, that's really creative and pleasing. icon_biggrin.gif I can compare it to my own skill with PTUX (although it kinda looks more like you're using Pure Remembrance, not sure) and yours are better-- it's like what mine would look like if I fell asleep and dreamed about the PTUX tileset and the dream made it super vivid and exaggerated and colorful and incredible. You have a knack with this set, Prossie!

And you're designing this in 2.10? Excellent! Let's pay some more respect to the precessors that brought us to where we are today.

This is definitely a Quest I would enjoy thoroughly. I also like how you're not making it super long. There's something appealing about a shorter game with excellent quality; something timeless about it, like, every couple months you can romp through it again for old times' sake and it won't get old.

I'm really looking forward to it!

Oh but one thing. "Antiquity" is the name of Saffith's Classic-styled Quest, so when I saw this thread my first thought was it's a sequel to it. icon_razz.gif No worries though.

It's Pure Remembrance with a bunch of rips from both the original DoR Tileset and its sequel(?) counterpart. I'm gonna work on all the clashing stuff eventually, but for now I just want to get the darned quest done.

That being said, the dungeons might not be quite as big, but I plan on a big overworld at least. I love overworlds and designing them is my absolute favorite part of ZC. Dungeons are jerks though, so they might end up being a bit more brief unless I suddenly turn into the friggin' Batman of dungeon design. But, I'll probably use two full sized dmaps at least just for the overworld (but that counts Death Mountain, Gerudo Desert, Faron Woods, Castle Town, all that other good jazz so it's not too terribly much really).

I also just want to say I'm glad I got called a poet of screen design with this set, since you know, what I also posted for the story details is something I wrote in between working on it. icon_razz.gif

And dammit, I was going to call it Ancient Mementos, but I knew that'd be too close to Yoshimi and Blue_Knight's project. Looks like I failed in that regard anyway, but I suppose it doesn't matter.

Hah, you and I are opposites in that regard. icon_biggrin.gif I revel in designing dungeons! But with big overworlds it feels like a chore.

I recall Plissken being like you in that his skills were weighted far more towards overworlds.

Hey, some time maybe for a future project or something, I'd be delighted to get my hands dirty for you if you need a few dungeons done! I'm against the idea of participating in team projects but that doesn't mean I'd write it off 100% of the time.

Why not just "Mementos", or "Zelda: Mementos"? IMO the one-word name feels more suspenseful and atmospheric, and I approve of it.

Looks great Prospekt. I gotta say that you are extremely good at screen design. Very excited about this project, and will be sure to keep an eye on it, while you are in development. I would volunteer to test it for you, but I do have quite a few quests I am already testing, unless a couple have booted me for being so inactive in testing over the past couple months. I guess I'll see what I have on my plate when you ask for testers though. icon_smile.gif (If you want a reference for my testing skills, you can ask Dawnlight) Great work though. icon_biggrin.gif

I love you.

Er... ahem.

The screens look fantastic. I noticed you added some detail to the top of the cliffs of the field screen, and it has become exponentially better for it. The beach/field shot is spectacular, and the dungeon looks wonderfully atmospheric.

And now I'm interested. Gonna explain this one, or keep us guessing til you release it?

Are you serious? A seven dungeon quest before the expo? If you can actually get that done, I think that'd make you the faster quest designer here.

So nobody's made a "Mementos: The Freshmaker" joke yet? I'm disappointed, frankly.

Open overworlds are far too rare in Zelda Classic, so it's nice to hear that someone's actually interested in actually maintaining a sense of exploration and nonlinearity. Your screen design has gotten way nicer since I last saw it, too--I see you've finally found a way to make the overworld borders look interesting while keeping them border-y. You have my approval.

Yeahhhhhhhhh there's no way this'll get finished by the expo, lawl. I was just on an insane boost of motivation in ZC for a while, but then life reminded me that it still existed. But I'd say Hyrule Field is at least close to 1/3 of the way mapped out.

Also, I'm going to attempt to have Levels 1-3 be able to be completed in any order, and then 4-6 in any order as well. It may be tough to design puzzle and enemy-wise, but I think it could be done. At least with Levels 4-6, the arsenal would be closer to completed.

Been a few days, but I wanted to welcome you to the QPF, Prospekt. icon_smile.gif

I suppose I'll make a thread formalizing it, if you don't mind, since you're doing more than Awakening Courage around here.

A couple more shots. Changed the overworld palette.

Silly moblin, you can't enter people's houses! You're not a PC. icon_glare.gif

I've also picked the Cloud Tops theme from TMC as my current overworld music. I think it fits, personally. But that's just me.

It looks so much better with the new palette! Now, it's not bland. Great screen design also.

Nothing more than a couple screenshots, but I am still working on the quest, so there is that. Hyrule Field itself is nearly finished, though. Maybe about 3/4 of the way done. icon_smile.gif

Also, those screenshots:
